FieldNET Helps Brazilian Grower Use Resources More Efficiently

When it comes to growing quality tomatoes, it starts with selecting the right variety.
“The variety is very important,” said Alaor Ávila, owner of Fazenda Panorâmica. “For example, for tomatoes aimed for the tomato sauce industry need to be red and very sweet to provide flavor for the sauce.”
Efficient irrigation is also needed to produce a quality crop.
“Irrigation is crucial,” he said. “Without water at the right time and in the right amount, it would be impossible to produce in this region.”
Ávila’s operation is located in central Brazil – in the state of Goiás. Passed down to him from his parents and grandparents, the farm now spans more than 750 hectares (1,853 acres).
“We have five Zimmatic® center pivots on the property,” he said. “With them, we can water the crop uniformly and apply fertilizer through the machine. We can also apply chemical pesticides to fight pests.”
To maximize efficiency, all of Ávila’s center pivots are equipped with FieldNET remote management technology.
“We are able to operate the irrigation equipment remotely,” he said. “FieldNET helps us to have perfect management. We don’t need to be on the farm 100 percent of the time. I can monitor and control the equipment from anywhere through the FieldNET app on my phone.”
Remote management has helped Ávila reduce trips to the field – saving him time and wear and tear on his vehicle.
“It’s an honor to work with something that’s so essential for human life – food,” he said. “So, we are always looking for ways to efficiently use the resources that are available to us.”
