Earth Day 2022 - Tree Planting at Elecsys
Apr 29, 2022
Coordinated by Olathe DE&I Council
Sustainability is truly the key to a healthy future. That is why we focus on it so intentionally here at Lindsay Corporation – and we were able to showcase that here at our Elecsys location in Olathe with a fun and meaningful project on Earth Day. To celebrate the global holiday on April 22nd, our Olathe Diversity, Equity & Inclusiveness Council coordinated something that goes deep – specifically, 2-4 feet deep.
There were 6 lovely Autumn Glow Maple Trees planted in front of our facility, not just for their beauty, but also for their positive environmental impact. One that includes carbon dioxide absorption - approximately 240lbs of carbon absorption over the next year. This is based on data found in a study done by the European Environment Agency that claims a standard hardwood tree can absorb 48 lbs of carbon dioxide each year.
This tree-planting project originated within the DE&I Council but was opened to our entire facility to participate in. We had over a dozen volunteers that collectively dug 6 holes, each was about 3 feet in diameter and at least 2 feet deep. All in all, the project took about 2 hours to complete – but its positive impact on the environment will last a lifetime.
You may be wondering what the DE&I Council is. We will take a more in-depth look at it later on, but for now, here’s a quick summary:
In 2019, the Omaha Diversity & Inclusiveness (D&I) Council was formed, initiating the process of celebrating the diversity of our workforce and encouraging a culture of inclusiveness at every level within the organization. In September of 2020, our Elecsys facility became the second Lindsay location to form a D&I Council. The DE&I Council’s mission is to further the goals of Lindsay in celebrating the diversity in our ranks and promoting inclusiveness throughout the organization and in the community. Activities enacted include diversity-themed bulletin boards, communication slides celebrating diversity themes, presentations to the company in support of the Lindsay D&I goals, social events celebrating diversity, and recommendations to the senior leadership team regarding D&I topics and issues to address. Now, we can add tree planting to that list as well.
Stay tuned to hear about more DE&I – past, present and future!
