Overcoming Wheel Track Challenges
Mar 4, 2020
Frustrated with stuck machines? Tired of flat tires? Concerned about deep ruts taking a toll on your fields and equipment?
If you answered yes to any of those questions, it might be time to consider alternatives to your pivot’s traditional bias tires.
“Wheel ruts can cause a lot of season-long headaches,” said Brad Dunbar, after market manager at Lindsay Corporation. “There are some quick fixes – like adjusting sprinklers and tire pressure, but if deep ruts are a chronic problem, you should consider a long-term solution.”
Dunbar said Lindsay’s NFTrax and Trelleborg radial tires are quickly becoming a popular, high-performance option in the irrigation market.
“NFTrax is an airless wheel assembly that will never go flat, which reduces costly downtime,” he said. “It also adapts to terrain without creating deep ruts, and it moves right over field obstructions without getting stuck.”
With an aggressive alternating tread design, Dunbar said the optional NFTrax Z-Tread helps growers tackle even the toughest terrain.
“Z-Tread is designed for areas where more traction is needed,” he said. “It’s a great solution for growers who irrigate over slopes, low spots and slick, clay-based soils.”
Dunbar said radial tires will also help you save time and improve your system’s performance.
“Our Trelleborg radials have a wider, flatter profile than the rounded construction of bias ply tires. That means more surface contact area in the wheel track and better flotation, as well as fewer rutting and wheel track depth issues as the season progresses,” he said. “They also have a rugged design, which reduces flats in the field.”
